GWIM Devotion: Keeping Your Heart Right Before God

Scripture: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."-Psalm 51:10 (NKJV) Word For Today Friend, have you ever felt like you're trying to do everything right on the outside, but your heart feels a little tired, heavy, or distant? If you are longing for a deeper, more authentic walk with God, it all starts on the inside. Let's talk about what it truly means to maintain a right heart before the Lord, and how we can invite Him to renew us from the inside out.

There’s a saying we often hear, “A pure heart will make God fight for you." Do I believe it? Yes, I do. But let’s be honest about what a pure heart really is. Most of the time when we talk about having a good heart, we measure it by what we haven’t done. “I don’t steal. I’ve never done that. I’m not like them."

But Scripture reminds us, “The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out." None of us are perfect on our own. And if we’re truthful, there are areas God asked us to obey, and we didn’t. There are little lies we told and tried to forget. There are hidden places in our hearts- jealousy, bitterness, unforgiveness- that we’ve kept covered.

The Psalmist didn’t say, "God, I serve You, so I must be clean." Instead, he prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart" — Psalm 139:23. That is humility, ladies, and that is purity.

So today I’m speaking to you, and to me, if there is bitterness in your heart. If your intentions toward people aren’t pure. If hurt from the past is blocking your obedience. Hear me: it will not take you higher. It will not unlock the doors God has for you. But repentance will. God is not looking for perfect people; He’s looking for surrendered hearts. Let Him search you, cleanse you, and let Him fight for you.

Before we look at how to prepare our hearts, we need to anchor ourselves in two foundational truths. First, you need to know that you cannot hide anything from God. We can mask our struggles, our anxieties, or our frustration from the world, and sometimes even from ourselves. But God sees right through the surface. He knows our deepest thoughts, our hidden motives, and our secret worries.

Secondly, you cannot purify your heart on your own. This is such a freeing truth, sweet sister. Try as we might, we don't have the power to scrub our own hearts clean to the standard of holiness God desires. We desperately need His grace and His transforming power to do what we cannot do for ourselves.

So, if we can't clean our own hearts, how do we prepare them for what God wants to do in and through us?

1. Ask God to Reveal the Condition of Your Heart. It starts with a humble prayer of invitation. We have to stop running from self-reflection and ask the Holy Spirit to shine His gentle light into the corners of our hearts.

2. Stay in God's Word Daily. The Bible is the mirror of our souls. When we spend time reading Scripture, God's truth washes over our minds, realigning our thoughts, soothing our worries, and gently pointing us back to His path.

3. Get Rid of All Sin in Your Life. Holiness isn't about perfection; it is about direction. When God highlights a habit, an attitude, or a choice that is pulling you away from Him, choose to let it go. Confess it quickly, receive His forgiveness, and walk away from it.

4. Keep Your Heart with All Diligence. Guarding your heart takes intentional effort. Proverbs reminds us that everything we do flows from our hearts. Pay attention to what you allow into your mind, what media you consume, and what you dwell on when you are alone. Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV)

We simply cannot expect God to bless our plans and make our lives work smoothly when we are actively holding onto things that hinder His work in us. Life flows so much better when our daily posture echoes the exact prayer of King David (Psalm 139:23–24). David didn't ask God to look at his resume or his accomplishments; he asked God to look at his heart. He wanted anything ungodly uncovered because he knew a right heart was the key to experiencing God's best. Choose softness over hardness today. Prayer Father, search my heart today. I invite the Holy Spirit to shine His gentle light into the hidden corners of my soul, revealing any bitterness, pride, or un-confessed sin that I’ve been holding onto. I acknowledge that I cannot clean my own heart or walk this path in my own strength. Please wash me, renew me, and grant me the grace to choose softness over hardness.
