When God Makes a Way: Understanding the Purpose of Dry Land

We regularly view dry places in life with immediate dread. In our human experience, dryness equates to barrenness, lack, and stagnation, a season where nothing grows, and survival feels like a daily chore. But when we look closely at the mechanics of divine miracles in the Scripture, a radically different picture appears. Sometimes, the dry land God creates is not a symbol of abandonment, but the exact vehicle of your deliverance. The story of Israel's deliverance and finding God in the dry places did not begin at the edge of the Red Sea; it began much earlier when God called Moses with a clear mandate: "Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, Let My people go, that they may serve Me and worship Me in the wilderness.’" This demand echoed repeatedly throughout the book of Exodus (5:1, 7:16, 8:1, 9:1), but Pharaoh adamantly refused.

The bible notes a dual dynamic in this resistance: Pharaoh hardened his own heart, and God allowed that stubbornness to continue. This delay was purposeful. Had Pharaoh surrendered quickly, Israel might have credited human kindness for their release. By allowing the resistance to mount, requiring ten plagues and grueling confrontations, God ensured that when freedom finally came, every nation knew that only His sovereign hand could engineer such a rescue.

The promise was absolute, but the fulfillment required a process of endurance. Just like them, we believers commonly hold a promise from God in our hearts while maneuvering frustrating delays. When Pharaoh finally let them go, hope soared as the families marched out. But the relief was short-lived. Pharaoh changed his mind, gathering his chariots and elite army to hunt them down.

Suddenly, Israel found themselves trapped in a terrifying box. In front of them was the Red Sea, deep and impossible to cross. Behind them was the Egyptian army—angry and armed. On both sides was no escape route. They could not go forward; they could not go backward. They were surrounded on every side, with no apparent way out, and they cried out in fear.

Dear sisters, have you ever felt like that? A divine promise in your spirit, but a glaring sea in front of you, an enemy behind you, and no exit in sight?. God had not brought them that far to abandon them. That night, divine intervention took a physical form. The pillar of cloud moved from leading the front of the camp to standing directly between them and the Egyptians (Exodus 14:19–20). In a display of divine irony, the same cloud brought dense darkness to the pursuers while casting brilliant light on the children of God. Then came the miracle of the terrain. As Exodus 14:21 shows us, God drove the sea back with a strong east wind, turning the abyss into dry ground.

I really want us to think about this imagery for a moment. Water is fluid, unpredictable, and deep; it represents the chaos and overwhelming trials that threaten to drown us. But God didn't just push the walls of water aside; the Scripture emphasizes that the Israelites walked through on dry ground. Let us read that: “The Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground with the waters a wall to the right and to the left”.-Exodus 14:22 (MSG)

Miraculously, the wind didn't just leave behind a muddy, treacherous swamp where millions of people and their livestock would slip and mire down. God prepared solid footing in the middle of the deep, constructing a miracle ground where the walls of water stood as protection on their right and left.

Once Israel reached the other side, the waters crashed back into place. The very path that served as a highway of rescue for God's children became the exact place of judgment for the enemy. The Egyptians themselves said: “Let us flee, for the Lord is fighting for them.”

If you are currently walking through a season that feels dry, restrictive, or stripped of comfort, pause before you label it as barrenness or complete lack, sister.

It might not be a punishment; it might be a pathway. God frequently dries up old environments, old options, and familiar securities because staying where you were meant certain destruction. And sometimes, dry ground provides stability. When God moves you into a transitional space, He ensures that your feet have something firm to stand on, even if towering walls of water surround your current reality.

The very dry path that served as a rescue for the children of Israel became the trap for their enemies. And I pray for you today: may every obstacle that has tormented you lose its footing today, as God actively repurposes your terrain to pave the way for your ultimate victory.

"I will go ahead of you, clearing and paving the road" — Isaiah 45:2 (MSG)

Sisters, the dry land is a picture of hope. Even when God has promised something, there may be a delay; be assured that delay is not denial. Sometimes God allows a hardened heart or a closed door so that when deliverance comes, only He gets the glory. Even at the hardest point of the journey, when everything seems closed on every side, God’s people are never alone.

God is present, and His protection may already be working in ways that cannot yet be seen. The very thing God uses for the protection of His children can also become the means through which He deals with those who oppose His purposes. Because when God makes a way, He makes it firm, guarding every step. The battleground God sets is the battleground He fights.

What "sea" are you currently standing in front of, and how might God be preparing dry ground right beneath your feet?

God is not limited by the geography of our crisis. Where we see an impassable sea, He sees an engineering project for a miracle. Our Guest's Bio
